Abandoned Winter Olympics Site: Sarajevo

Monday, February 24, 2014

There's something so poignant about these haunting photos of the abandoned winter olympics site in Sarajevo from 1984.  Sarajevo is such a special city to mark as he spent summers there in college, and later took me back to visit - the city and the people have such a beautiful heart..

And hello btw! Did you like my blog break last week? I got back from Berlin Sunday night and catapulted in to the week of no organization, lots of last minute plans and general laziness, ha!

This always seems to happen after the olympics leave town. Huge abandoned buildings and stadiums, too big for any normal use. It's kind of sad... the way an abandoned fair ground is sad. But the photos are hauntingly beautiful indeed!

This is quite eye-opening. So much money wasted, when it could be used for improving the welfare of the people. And I agree, I love Sarajevo so much, it's haunting to see these pictures.

Do you think this happened to a lot of them? I bet it does, once the games are over the towns are soon forgotten about. Bet no one can remember the names of the towns that held the South African world cup. Sad really, great post.

what is it about abandoned places? why do we leave these remains? why not clear them away? sometimes I wonder about things like that in my own town, a dilapidated building that has been there for so long I don't even notice it, but in truth is is such an eyesore.

It makes me sad and a bit angry to think about all the money that was spent building this, and now it's just standing there. But the photos are still beautiful in an eerie way.
