my almost 16 month old. rocketing out in to the world...saying 'bath', 'shoe', 'danke (dank ka ka!), 'whoaaa!' 'nein, nein, nein' 'dry dry dry', 'ya' - a little mix of german and english there, running across rooms, putting things in the garbage if we ask him, putting things away, blowing out candles (and lights), making us laugh, giving hugs and kisses, back rubs, trying to read me books, "brushing" his teeth, throwing balls for bama...

i guess i just didn't imagine it being like this - totally joyful, laughing everyday with him, wanting him as close as possible (so many hugs!), squealing in excitement and clapping when he says or does something completely insignificant to the average observer, a heart that physically hurts with love. so much i love him. this boy!

Adult Bounce Castle

Aaaaand you guys, I need to do this. My friend found it while pinning things for our upcoming Berlin trip - we were so excited for like, a minute, until we found out it was part of an art installation and that it had gone already.

William Forsythe, Dana Caspersen and Joel Ryan teamed up to create this concept - which was more about choreography and movement through space, color, sound - and ended up making the guiness book of world records. Originally debuted in 1997 in London it has been popping up as an art installation in different European Cities (last spotted in Berlin in the summer of 2013).

On another note, I'm a little sad because I realized (again) that I keep pinning things and forgetting to change the comment, the one under the picture - and so i bet a bunch of my pins say something in a style that I'd never say, and not how'd I say it. yikes.

Cross Country Skiing

Did you have a good weekend? I tried Cross Country Skiing for the first time (at Melchsee Frutt) - My friend Janine and I took lessons.  I pretty much hated it. It was a 2 hour lesson and I was looking at the clock already 15 minutes in to it...and by the time we were heading back I was hating life! I had NO idea I could be so incredibly bad at something!! But then, we got to work today and couldn't stop laughing at what a sight we must have with the pom pom on my hat bobbing furiously as I "skii'd" up this hill while the instructor gliding along besides me yelling 'GLIDE! GLIDE!' and I couldn't stop laughing at all the images of Janine sprawled out on the ground...HA! I mean, it was worth it to be laughing at ourselves all day long! All that aside, it was nice to be up in the mountains for a day! Have you been?? I think I'll stick to regular skiing from now on!

(I had to make this...)

Chicago on Ice

I am so glad that we just missed that big freeze thing that happened in the US over Christmas's like we were on the last flight out of Saigon! Flights started delaying after ours, then temps dropped like crazy. Were you in on any of this? These pictures of Chicago on ice from the Huffington Post are so great. I get so excited when i see that city...(click that link to see more)

Sally Harless

To adorn the walls of your little people, or maybe even yours...I would love for Wesley to grow up thinking stars might be in a fox's belly. My friend won a print and I ran across Sally Harless and her prints on Facebook - so glad I did!

Speaking of little people,  Marks been traveling for work soooo I've been a single mom for a week and a half so far to this toddler kid who all of a sudden is a super picky eater.  This is not for the weary. I will naively (because 2 weeks is NOT comparable) say that single moms are my serious heroes, with all sincerity.  The amount of threats covered with a sweet voice and smiles is off the charts about now because if he throws that thing in the garbage one more time i will lose. my. shit. I actually think he's never seen me super annoyed until this and so he keeps doing it because he's trying to compute what is going on. I feel bad until he laughs. Because I think he thinks I'm trying to be funny.

ANYWAY, anyway, anyway, did I tell you that I had a dream that I was a Kardashian sister and James Franco was living with us temporarily and we fell in love? And then I woke up actually with in-love feelings - it was very dramatic. And now I need these james franco leggings

2014: 5 Ways to Start Eating Healthier

I'm definitely not a health expert (and if I were, another health expert would contradict everything I said, ha!) but over the past year I've definitely made some huge changes with the way I eat (especially after completing whole30 that one time).  The past year I've ready so many articles that discuss food and how huge of an effect it has on everything about us - down to the way our cells work, our DNA, how our body fights viruses and disease up to how we sleep, perform, think, act, feel, etc.  I can't ignore food and what I nourish my body with anymore. Ignorance really is bliss in this case.  So I thought I'd share 5 ways to start eating healthier this year.  Have you been doing anything new?

1. Drink Your Coffee Black.
I know you can do it! (If you don't already...) After YEARS - like I remember drinking coffee when I was in elementary school (ok, most of it was milk but it was a treat!) of two spoonfuls of sugar and milk in my coffee (a couple times/day) I made the transition almost a year ago and have never looked back. It will take's an acquired taste and then I promise you'll start to look forward to your coffee just as much as before

2. Substitute Pasta Noodles with Zucchini Noodles
After completing my first whole30 (in which you can't have carbs for 30 days) one of the things that I kept going with was julienning zucchinis for noodles. I love zucchini in the first place and this is just one way to feel less huge after eating a pasta dish and to increase your vegetable intake.

3. Substitute Cauliflower for Rice
It's so easy - you only need to chop a head of cauliflower in the food processor, put it in the microwave and you have a rice substitute to mix in to whatever it is that you are making. Brilliant. (here is the simple steps for cauliflower rice)

4. Use Coconut Oil/Ghee
I used to cook anything that involved a pan with tons of butter. Instead now I use coconut oil or ghee - but mostly coconut oil. Its quite handy for sauteing, greasing pans, putting on your sweet potato, etc.

5. Cut Sugar.
I think sugar is EVIL. I'm in the midst of my 2nd Whole30 so i've cut sugar for 30 days in a row once before. Its amazing but after 30 days my taste for sugar had lowered drastically - it's always tempting but I just didn't want it because it was too sweet. Not to mention, I felt awful the first few times I had it after the 30 days. So I recommend cutting it where you can...there are so many alternatives (also, its in everything). When baking, try cutting it in half or substituting dates. Focus on healthier snacks like dried fruit (w/o sugar), healthy alternative muffins, nuts, fruits, avocado, etc).

Eating healthy, whatever that means to you - whether its Vegetarian or Paleo - is a lifestyle and it's a huge change to commit to.  But, its do-able - it's only learning a new way of cooking - and once you've gotten used to all the substitutions and what to reach turns completely normal..a new normal.

French Vintage

Abby in France! My new favorite vintage Etsy shop.  I can't stop drooling over the vintage Charles et Charlus leather bags, its true.
Anyway, I was so impressed with the selection - I can tell that its carefully curated - that I emailed Abby to get the story. I'll share her response here because I really couldn't explain it any better - thanks for taking the time to answer!
We don't really have thrift stores here; we have some weekly and monthly flea markets. I am just home for lunch between two of them now. As an American i am a big fan of french savoir faire, whether it's the bags I find, the jewelry, the antiques, or the paintings. Also, there's always a really good vibe at the flea market, which makes a marked contrast with how the french usually are! And, I feel like I am doing a good deed by making all these things available as well as giving them new life...which is called OCD. But anyway, this area in the north of France is known for its seemingly endless supply of antiques.
So there you have it - this is definitely a store to watch...and buy me bags from.

Blog Redesign

Do you know whats fun? Collecting inspiration for a blog redesign! I've officially started working with Haruka from The Denizen Company to re-design my blog layout in to something that I've been wanting for a really long time and I can't wait to see and use the final product.  She has been absolutely lovely to work with! It will still be around a month and a half until I receive the layout...but can't wait to show you.

Also, the Ludacris one is always funny even though I've seen it before...there are a lot of other maps here if you are interested (not to mention, more intelligent than the ones I chose to highlight...)

Pinterest Food Try

I made this Green Pizza with a Cauliflower Base tonight - it is wayyyyy good. And I added a few shrimps from this recipe (that I was making at the same time). I think the key is the Basil and Lemon Sauce that is a part of the recipe...which is my favorite sauce I've ever made I think. Pinterest food try win!

Urban Renewal

I ran across this article about a guy in his early 20's who bought a house in Detroit for $500 to restore.  It's the kind of story that moves you to want to do something about something...The reason he did it, his dream and his words were beautiful..check out the full article here (which is one of the best things I've read on the Internet in awhile!) I had to share..

my boys

A boy and his (slightly pudgy (its his winter coat) we're working on it) dog. Sigh.
Over the last 15 months brown dog has adjusted calmly to the storm that is wesley, he has gracefully bowed down from the spotlight to share it with the new star. Wesley goes in for bama kisses (in his mouth), body slam hugs him every now and then, mostly bama stays out of his way, very patiently. but at least wesley is his best friend when wesley is eating/has a snack to share. They make me smile.

Vanilla Funfetti Cupcakes

Ok, so I'm on 8 of Whole30 (my 2nd one, and its way easier this time) but for some reason - I was scrolling through Pinterest this w/e and these cupcakes from how sweet it is really caught my eye...and then I revisited it again..and again. I don't even particularly LIKE cupcakes and I don't ever choose sprinkles, but I can't get this out of my head! I think its sugar trying to siren me back in. I'm convinced sugar is the evilest of evils and I constantly think about how I wish I had the will power to really not eat it ever again - but I'm not sure I do and also because its in EVERYTHING (including alcohol which I have no desire to give up forever). Things you wouldn't even think that its in...its there. And it freaks me out. But anyway, still, these look pretty amazing ;)

P.S. You still have until Thursday to enter my giveaway for the iPhone case cover!

I know this is random for me, but I'm actually here today to recommend an Avon product to you...Avon! The last time I heard of it was in one of my childhood favorite movies, Edward Scissorhands ("avon calling"!)...but THEN my sweet grandma decided to make it a little side hobby which meant that I got to troll through her box of products at Christmas and this was the best thing that I ended up with. And it's .99 CENTS. Thats not even a dollar. I don't get it.
I got the wine and the rose color. I'm totally not a lipstick girl even though I really want to be - and occasionally I'll bust out this beautiful red nars color that I spent too much money on but it ends up half off after I've had the first sip of my drink...and I do NOT have the focus to keep reapplying lipstick all night (ain't nobody got time for that)
But anyway, this stuff is like a chapstick (so easy) and the color is amazing. (the rose one I'll be wearing all summer, it made me feel like a j.crew model basically)

but ANYWAY again, I thought I'd recommend it because its super cheap and I really like it. And if you want to buy it you can order it through the sweetest grandmother ever at her Avon website which is here

Sweater Weather

Big chunky knits and sweatshirts are what I'm all about at the moment. Also, in internet love with the tokyo one...but just a lil' out of my price range (which is 0$ after vacation in the US!)

P.S. 25 sweatshirts perfect for any occasion (refinery29)

Top 5 Books of 2013

Here's a list of my top 5 books from 2013 (you can see the top 5 from 2012 here). Seeing as how I spent HALF the year reading Game of Thrones I had to give it a spot, even though its not my normal reading genre (butimean, its good)

1. Far From the Tree - Probably the most interesting book I've ever read - on the identity of parents and parenting children with different challenges (dwarfism, deafness, giftedness, autism, etc) - this gave me a completely different perspective on each of the 'disabilities' written about.
2. Replay - on what it would be like to keep living life over and over again (and being aware of it) - want to try it with that lost love? new career? it definitely makes you think a little.
3. Gone Girl - the ending. oh my gosh.
4. The Fault in Our Stars - Some teen lit for you - but very moving and will make you cry.
5. A Game of Thrones - do I need to explain this one?

Do you have any recommendations for 2014?

I can't believe its Monday and I can't believe that I'm going back to work, that is pretty lame. But anyway...

I love these pictures of Chicago that my sister in law (Liz) snapped as she flew in one morning - I love that city! Last week we went in to the city one night to see a random band and it was snowing and so beautiful driving along Michigan Avenue - and we definitely jumped out of the car to make snow angels and then got random people to do them with us! ha!
