Teenage Bedrooms: Self Portraits

Thursday, February 21, 2013

Totally cool...cameras were given to teenagers (in 2005) and they were instructed to take photos of their bedrooms. Do you remember your teenage bedroom and all the randomness? I wish I had more pictures!

Pinterest Food Try: Dijon Chicken

Wednesday, February 20, 2013

I love Pinterest for recipes, I have been pretty much exclusively cooking from my Food board and its been great. It's going to be especially helpful for when my friend and I start Whole 30 in the middle of next month (have you done that?).  This was pretty good...and easy - despite burning the almonds, breaking my favorite dish in the process and using normal mushrooms. Mark said it was a "no" as he had flash backs to initiation to his college society house when they had to stay up all night and eat disgusting food concoctions (where they made heavy use of dijon mustard)...oops.

Ingredients:
(serves 4)

350 gram package fresh linguine, cooked
4 boneless skinless chicken breasts
1 cup chanterelle mushrooms
3 tablespoons olive oil
4 cloves minced garlic
Salt and pepper to season
1/2 cup toasted slivered almonds
4 oz. white wine
2 cups whipping cream
3 Tbsp Dijon mustard

Instructions:

Heat olive oil in a large heavy bottomed frying pan over medium low heat. Add chicken breasts, garlic, season with salt and pepper and continue to fry the chicken until completely cooked.
Remove chicken from pan and hold in a warm oven.

Add to the pan:
4 oz white wine and simmer until volume is reduced by half.

Then add:
2 cups whipping cream
3 tbsp Dijon mustard
Salt and pepper to season.

Simmer until sauce thickens enough to coat a metal spoon. Return Chicken to the sauce, add the chanterelle mushrooms and simmer for an additional 2 minutes. Serve over cooked linguine. Sprinkle with toasted slivered almonds.

Happy Valentine's Day people. Sometimes its much easier and more fun to be cynical about this holiday...in the US I would get really excited about having one of those heart pizzas delivered, but that was about it. I think most of it is silly but deep down I don't really mind it. And thats my secret ;) (and now i have a really cute son to kiss all day)

How are you celebrating?

Goodbye Fasnacht :( :( :(

Wednesday, February 13, 2013

Ok, so here's my last fasnacht photo - me and a new friend. I'm sorry you can't see the eskimo outfit the best! And I'm not wearing the wig :( I wasn't the best at finding my camera during all the fun night times...because it was cold. and i was mostly frozen and to get my camera involved way too much work (like taking off gloves, etc). And the other ones are of us dancing in a pub...no one needs to see that, haha!
On one of the craziest nights (monday night) i had a fever and strep throat and had to walk through all the fun on the way to the dr.!!! it was torture!! but I caught it quickly and was back to health on tuesday where I got to spend the evening enjoying the madness. I will miss it so much. so only 359 more days!

P.S. Ok, the blog will go back to normal now.
P.S.S Would you wear these jeans? I mean seriously????

they go together like...

Fasnacht Part I

Thursday, February 7, 2013

I'm like crazy excited about Fasnacht (Carnival) being here. Every year at this time Luzern is transformed in to an organized chaos. Floats, bars on wheels, people drinking everywhere, parties, insane costumes, confetti, drums, brass band music 24/7. Last year on my way to the station for work there were still people out at 7am partying. I love it - it's such a fun atmosphere! Some people leave the city for these days but I always want to get the most out of it. By day it's a little more calm with parades and everyone dressed up enjoying street food and the bands that are playing everywhere but by night...it's insane. I can't even describe it...

This year *this morning!* I finally was able to catch the 5am kick off and it was awesome! Who doesn't love a beer and hot dog for breakfast??? My friends and I met at around 4:45 and walked to the center where it all begins. About 5 minutes until 5 (the Swiss are still punctual even at this event)...all of the lights outside go off and everyone watches a boat with the Safran Guild (the original Luzern guild) arriving to the dock...they stand on it in costume all eery and quiet with candles and then some fireworks and canons go off, confetti rains over the city...and they start dancing like crazy people - and this marks the beginning! it was followed by a parade of bands in costume through the old town. We walked around to see what was going then I came back. It's almost 1pm and I still hear band music everywhere, even on our street...thank goodness Wesley can sleep through it! We're about to head out soon for some street food and to catch another parade...wondering what Wesley will think :)

//These photos are taken from a local radio stations website - I'll share some of my favorites soon!!

Jupe du Jour Vintage

Tuesday, February 5, 2013

I recently found the Etsy shop Jupe du Jour and ordered this vintage animal print shirt - after some back and forth emails the above happened. A style post. BY ME. My girl Jenn and I parked our strollers and kids on the street and took a million shots...999,999 of which were bad (like...i was posing way awkwardly).. So whatever. There's me. On the Internet. Major props to you girls who do this everyday!

And shout out to Jupe du Jour Vintage...such a fun shop. Someone snap up these Brown Leather Woven Loafers or this black asymmetrical tunic!

P.S. I seriously need better posture man!

Planner anxiety

Monday, February 4, 2013

I've gotta confess...for most of 2013 I have felt as if my life is spriraling out of control. Do you know why? Because I DON'T HAVE A PLANNER. I have piles of things on my kitchen table to send out, to fill out, things to do...but I haven't done anything because I couldn't open my planner, look at a week, and see what I wanted to accomplish. Seriously. I missed my dogs birthday even (happy 6th bama!). Last week I finally ordered that beauty up there and around the time everyday the mail comes my heart starts beating fast because I think its here (not yet). But soon, my life will fall back in to place because I can write shit down....I CAN'T WAIT!!!

Hope you had a great weekend guys!

Weekend + Links

Friday, February 1, 2013

Have a wonderful weekend you guys! The highlight of my weekend will be dressing as an eskimo and taking part in Fasnacht in a village called Stans. I'm so excited that Fasnacht (carnival) is here!! It's definitely my favorite time of the year - seeing people's costumes, marching band music everywhere. I've always been so bad at covering this for the blog but I will make an extra effort this year because it's so incredible and different and such a fun part of Swiss life. What are you up to?!
