Yay or Nay?

The last few weeks I've finally gotten back in to running after having a baby back in October and it has felt so good. I kept up running until about 5 months then switched to the elliptical...but was sad all the time because I couldn't run! I'm so happy my gym has a daycare but also can't wait until the weather warms up so I can run outside again.

These fitness monitors keep coming up in my reader and everyone seems very excited about them. They seem like a great idea, but honestly, I can't get excited about being fixated on another gadget, another app, etc. Seems like just another thing that could steal my already stretched attention!

But maybe I'm missing out on something great? Have or do you use one? I think for now I'm giving them a pass...I want to enjoy my workouts while not worrying about steps...if that makes sense? Is there more to these than I think?

Let me know, yay or nay? And why?

p.s. i'm also too picky about jewelry to wear it, ha!

I have tried a few, and frankly they either get boring or they make me a bit too obsessive. If you enjoy running, I say go for it and don't worry too much about tracking, unless you want to start training for a marathon or something.

Love the studded bracelet!

It's a nay for me. Like you, I prefer to enjoy my run, and I'm only exercising to stay healthy, that's my only goal:)

I can imagine who it must feel not being able to run. So I'm very happy for you that you're "back on track" now ;). I go running two to three times a week even in winter and since I'm paying attention to my heart rate I even became a bit faster.

I was just saying to myself how much I miss walking outside!! It's so cold...so I just can't do it! I don't have a fitness monitor but I do have a pedometer. It is so hard to walk 10,000 steps!! Ahh it's hard! =)

I hope you find a happy medium with working out! That's great that your gym has a daycare!!

Have a warm weekend!! =)

Nay - just have fun with your excercise. Life's too short to add to the stress level - monitoring every little bit.
Plus, if you are doubtful, it's probably your gut saying no

My husband has a Fitbit and loves it. He likes data and measuring steps and stairs so it has been a great motivator and measure!
So yes, go for it and i hope you get to run again regularly soon!

I have the Nike FuelBand but if you're really into running, maybe heck out one of those GPS watches that can track your mileage?

yes, i've been getting them too, but have taken a pass too. i'm usually just thrilled to get some 'me' time to exercise and really couldn't careless about any gadgets.(too focused on getting as much work out in as possible before the baby wakes up for eg.). very happy that you've gotten back to running! love your bracelets and such lovely hands you have:-)

Krystal, really, I envy you for being a runner. I hate running. I can ride a bike or swim for miles...running, I hate it. As for this gadget, it's a nay. Sport must be a pleasure, especially when you have a small child I presume!

i mean, it looks nice but i guess you need to give it a whirl for a bit. we are swamped though

Did you get one of those pedometer things - is that your wrist? I like the look of that one, but I don't wear any gadgets when I run. I just sort of google map my route to figure out the distance and use the overall rough time to figure out my pace. But to be honest, I don't really care about my speed - I'm usually just happy that I complete a distance without crying. BUT I do enjoy looking at other people's running stats when they post them to facebook. It's kinda dumb they do that, but I'm a snoopy person.

Think it totally depends on the person. If you have the time and need to track it, I can understand how it helps someone. But, if, like you, you are already stretched out, I don't think it's necessary since you are already carving time to do what you need/want to do. =)

Those bracelets are adorable, girl! And I always wondered how long you are able to start exercising after having a baby. As far as apps, I agree with Elisa, they can get a little too obsessive and non enjoyable anymore. But maybe I just haven't found a good one yet.

Don't worry about the fitness monitors, just enjoy the moment! :)

Mary Jo at TrustYourStyle said...

I know a doctor or a trainer would recommend the monitor, but I think you're way ahead of the game to just be exercising during the winter. Also, I've found that when I stop enjoying something I tend to stop doing it altogether-so I think your attitude is pretty healthy :)

there is an option at my place of work to wear one and be on a team in which you compete for prizes. I didn't do it, I didn't want to be the person who never exercised bringing the team down.

Lovely bracelets...

Oh I love running the old fashioned way... no gadgets just my legs:)

Good for you for being fit.

I've never tried one, but I kind of agree that it can be a hassle to worry about it. I figure it's all about just getting a chance to physically exert myself, not necessarily about the steps/distance/time. I don't see myself using one. That said, I know some people who love them... so you could see if you have a friend you could borrow one from and see if you like it.

Hooray for running! It must be hard to let go of something you love for such a long time (but obviously, the reward at the end is totally worth it!). I was bummed to find my weights would have to decrease significantly when I fall pregnant. I'm one of those weird girls who loves lifting super heavy weights, it's the one thing that gets me to the gym (cardio suuuuuucks).

As for fitness monitors, I think they have their place, but like everything some people will love it and some people will hate it. Kind of like how some people like hand written lists and some people prefer it on their phone. Don't spend money on something you're not sure you're going to get full use out of :)
