OK, I had to share the cutest picture in the world with you...Meet Josephine. This is her first swim in the ocean! I can't handle the picture...honestly, it's so cute. Anyway, she is Jen's and Jen is one of my bff's here. So basically this my childs future g/f ;) jk! that is weird.

Chickpea Avocado Salad

Wednesday, August 29, 2012

I've recently become intrigued by the documentary called "Forks over Knives".  I'm NOT one to jump in to food fads but this was pretty compelling. Have you seen it? I'd love to know what you thought?

Anyway, it discusses the perks of eating a plant-based whole foods diet (cutting out meat and dairy for good).  It theorizes that things like heart disease, diabetes and cholesterol problems are voluntary and that cutting out meat and dairy can reverse/prevent these diseases.

Now, I'm thinking it would be basically impossible to ignore meat and dairy indefinitely so I'm not even going to try...I have no discipline...but we are making small steps like substituting milk with almond milk, breakfasts that are muesli based or smoothies and planning at least a few meals a week that are plant based and whole.  It won't hurt to try it out..

Here is one recipe that I've tried and actually liked!

Chickpea Avocado Salad
  • 4 cups cooked chickpeas, or 2 15oz cans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 small red onion, peeled and diced small
  • 2 cloves garlic peeled and minced
  • Zest of 1 lime and juice of 4 limes
  • 1 jalapeno pepper, minced (for less heat remove seeds)
  • 1/2 cup chopped cilantro
  • salt to taste
  • 1 avocado, halved, pitted, peeled and coarsely chopped
Combine all ingredients in a medium bowl and mix well.  Add the avocado just before serving.  (Eat alone or serve on a bed of greens for a complete meal).

*It's pretty lime-y so maybe cut out the zest and one lime?
*Recipe via the Forks Over Knives Cookbook.

P.S. The only other recipe I've ever photographed and featured...and it is most decidedly not plant based whole foods but is totally unhealthy and delicious ;)

Fall fun..

Tuesday, August 28, 2012

Here are some fun pieces for fall that I might not be able to resist. I'm so looking forward to being able to shop normal clothes - maybe it's my mood but I seem to be drawn toward some random pieces I think!  These are all from TopShop. I love finding new stores but always seem to go back to browsing them for their variety of style and flavors in one website (not to mention free shipping over a certain amount).

a little update

I miss Malta SO MUCH. Seriously.

Anyway, you guys, I have TIME lately. I have no big plans for the next couple of weeks (unless the baby decides to hit us up early). I'm working 60%, I have the apt to myself next w/e, the weather is lovely. All of his baby stuff is still in boxes, but you know what - I'm not stressed...because I'm focusing on relaxing (and we need to sell our desks)! I figure all of the craziness can start when it's born - but this last month?...it's my last days to be me. and to be us. and to spoil bama*. which is scary. and i'm not going to spend it running around stressing about having a crib ready.  (M says I shouldn't call it 'it' anymore?). My baby shower is later today (for me. weird). So, that's kind of how things are around here. I've felt amazing up until about last week and now I just feel like I would think a typical 8 mo. pregnant person should feel like I guess. Oh, and I've been mainly daydreaming about a big glass of cold beer. Sorry about it. No I'm not.

Anyway, I have nothing special to share...but I think I'm going to dedicate some serious time to catching up with YOU because I've been a bad blogger. Let me know if there's anything good I missed!

*ha, whatever, he'll always be spoiled!

Scarves

Scarf Season will soon be upon us! R29 shops has some great patterns (the first one is my favorite), although I'm not a fan of the prices.
I'm not going to lie, while I am loving swimming in the lake I am over the heat. Fall is my favorite season and I'm so ready for falling leaves, cool fresh breezes, warm drinks, boots, huge sweaters, cozy scarves and running outside in the lower temps...can. not. wait.

Vienna

Monday, August 13, 2012

Here are some photos from our trip to Vienna 2 weekends ago. I had had Vienna on my mind for awhile and we finally decided to book tickets pretty spontaneously. We traveled to/from by overnight train and I have to say – best way to travel ever! I hate flying though so pretty much anything beats a plane. Even a bike. I’d totally bike to Vienna to avoid planes.

The train was great though – you sleep, wakeup, get breakfast and you’re there! Then of course we stayed at Hotel Daniel which I’ve already raved about (you can see the blog post here).
Vienna definitely lived up to my expectations (except for the temp…it was freakin hot to the point that I didn’t care about taking pictures, I was just HOT). I loved the architecture, it seemed so grand. It reminded me of Rome in that there seemed to be “ancient” buildings and huge cathedrals at most turns but was also modern with a lot of shopping and caf√©’s (…pretty sure I just described most of Europe). We stumbled in to the best bookstore, ate the most amazing Wiener Schnitzel for dinner at Figlmuller (recommended by 2 friends), took a horse carriage ride around the Sch√∂nbrunn Palace, meandered around the Museum Quartier, visited the Hundertwasser Haus and the naschtmarkt (a huge food market/flea market) among other random things. Good times!

Have a great day - will be visiting you soon, I've been SO TIRED the last few days I'm lucky I'm brushing my teeth let alone blogging.

kbye!

Yesterday and The cutest picture of Bama in all existence.

Weekend. Links.

Saturday, August 11, 2012

My hood!

have a good w/e. I realized that this w/e is like the last w/e that we have with no plans and then all my weekends are like weddings, parties, showers, helping friends move and then BAM, baby. or baby somewhere in there. I'm freaking out a little...isn't there something epic I should be doing? But as one of my best friends put it yesterday, "you should be doing exactly what you're doing" - and I loved that.
Yesterday, that friend and I visited Frau Gerolds Garten in Zurich for dinner (think shipping container restaurant, all salads grown on premises, etc...so cool!) and did some shopping. Today I think we are going to spend some time in Buochs (where we used to live before Luzern) at the lake. And then I'm going to buy a freakin dustbuster!!! and i'm excited about it!

And to the links. Here are some cool things.

+ a fun roundup of yellow things
+ amazed at all of these random soaps...
+ i ordered this maternity dress from Asos for the baby shower. it's fantastic.
+ a bill murray onesie...creepy or awesome?
+ Respecting: this case against chictopia, lookbook, etc. i never did understand those..
+ On trying out veganism. Compelling!

Feel like more links? See the last couple weeks HERE and HERE

On making your bed...

Tuesday, August 7, 2012

I This is a super random post, but I ran across this article, "Make Your Bed! For Productivity, Profit and Peace"and I was all...I agree! I must be an ambassador for this! When I was in HS my great grandparents bought me a new bedroom set and the one stipulation (from my great grandpa) was that I make my bed every single day. And I totally have (he didn't say whether or not my future husband could do it to so I'm going with yes). Isn't it a curious thing to ask a great granddaughter? Anyway, he was one of the most precious people in my life and I at least haven't let him down with that one task (except for maybe some sick days) and sometimes i even make my friends beds because thats how i roll. Its definitely a small but far reaching and motivating action. I think he was on to something?!
Do you?

p.s. and there is bama. all up in my business as usual.

Recent buys.

Monday, August 6, 2012

Hi Monday. You suck. JK, you don't suck this week. You usually suck but this week you are merely another day of the weekend for me because I have you off! TAKE THAT!
aaaand I am crazy. But here are some recent purchases...2 books from an awesome bookstore we stumbled in to in Vienna (Shakespeare & Company)...and I couldn't resist these onesies from etsy shop Truly Sanctuary.
ok, peace out girlscouts!! (i call one of my bff's girl scout and he doesn't like it :()

happy friday blogsters

In love with this look. {via}
/ Hilarious article: American Baby Names Are Somehow Getting Even Worse
/ Loving these rich, colorful looking rooms.
/ A terrific dresser before and after.
/ The best public swimming pools in the world (I've been to Gellert Baths!)
/ Rich kids of instagram Tumblr - weirdly entertaining!
/ A hairless rat taking a bath, oddly cute.
/ Cool desktop backgrounds

Well, I'm totally slacking and these were my links from last week that I never posted... and I was so blog lazy this week I didn't really discover anything cool...but these still are cool!

Plans for the w/e? I have NONE. It's glorious. The majority of my friends have skipped town for one reason or another - which leaves me obligationless. I'm sad they are gone, but it's also a little bit free-ing - like...i don't need to feel like i should round everyone up for something fun, or i don't have to feel like I'm missing out if I just want to stay home. So I'm going to stay home! and read my book! and clean! and iron my laundry! and make dinners! and chocolate chip cookies! and catch up on blogs! and hang out with my boys! and sleep! and it's going to be the best w/e ever, especially because these kinds of weekends are beginning to feel very numbered. But anyway, I hope yours is great.

Place to Stay in Vienna: Hotel Daniel

Thursday, August 2, 2012

Before we discuss the fact that I carried my heavy Nikon all over Vienna - cursing it 95% of the time - and have no amazing pictures to show for it (jk, i am not going to discuss that) lets talk about where we stayed!
I've come to realize that choosing a cool place to stay when visiting a city is part of what contributes to my experience of a place. This can be a charming 30 euro/night bedroom in Cinque Terre, an old crickety room in an authentic swiss chalet (where you have to share a bathroom and feed the shower coins to keep it on), an amazing apartment that you found on AirBnB (like ours in Barcelona) or an impressive super trendy but affordable hotel - like Hotel Daniel! I always end up raving about the place I sleep over the sights I've seen. I know it might be weird, but anyway....
Hotel Daniel has been, by far, our most favoritest hotel that we've ever stayed in. I mean, there are hammocks in the room....hammocks! I also loved that the lobby area is impressively designed with amazing light fixtures, uniquely potted plants and furniture that I would love to call my own. We spent some time relaxing there eating homemade desserts from the bakery to the soundtrack of some pretty great music.  they also have a little shop (that could easily hold its own in any smart boutiquey area of your favorite city) that sold things like vintage looking toothpaste (of course i bought some), bikes, soaps and leather messenger bags. I wanted to pin everything. yeah i just said that...I need a life.
I would definitely recommend Hotel Daniel in Vienna...
(the only con...if you are super shy beware sharing a room with a friend or acquaintance as the shower is visible from the rest of the room...at least in the room we stayed in - just a forewarning!)

Hope you have all been having a great week. I've been slow readjusting for some reason - plus we had Wednesday off for the Swiss National Holiday so today actually feels like Monday and it kind of worked me over. But anyway, I hope to share more vienna pics and some pictures from a brunch on a farm for the Swiss holiday....later skaters!
