Julie (Inspired Shares) made my day today when she sent me this super cool picture (via) because of the triangle-esqueness - and predictably, I like it a ton! (thanks for having my back on my triangle thing) It's also possibly a sign that my weird and unexpected love is out of hand? I'm sorry! But I want to blog about them! (*hides face* as you all look to my header). And about the header, in my defense, I have severe header blues as I can't seem to design one that feels right to me! Do you know how that goes? (I was playing with a picture of buildings in Pixelmator and then that happened, how could I resist :)) Ok this is random, bye!

I guess I'm maybe starting to think Spring. Especially because fall was like 2 days long and I've been in denial all winter that warm weather was really gone and people started looking at me weird when I would mutter "just a few bad days, cold front", etc. ANYWAY. I like these.
P.S. I like this one too :)

One Day: Bookclub Blogger Book Review

Sunday, January 30, 2011

This months bookclub blogger's book choice was mine! You can head to The Daily Snapshot to check out the linked reviews and read more about the book (and join the bookclub, yeah?).  So, that being said, I really liked it! I chose it because I really appreciated some of the themes and I thought that everyone could take away some valuable messages from it, or at the very least, it would make the readers think.  It is by all means, not one of those books you'd take with you on a train or to a coffee shop to make yourself look smart (you know what i'm talking about!) - it's easy to read - good vacation book. I only say that I liked it though - because of the ending. I hadn't been that angry or annoyed with a books ending in a really long time (if ever?). So...just so you know.

Anyway, it's a story about Emma and Dexter, who meet on the night of their graduation, and it follows their lives and friendship throughout the next 20 years as they grow, learn, make mistakes, etc. But most of all, it's one of those stories that centers around being in love with a person, bad timing, things left unsaid, losing trust in another person, all things that are real and not very storybook.

What I liked most of all about it is that I could relate to the characters in some ways. They graduate as idealistic college students and begin life in the "real world" and they deal with real world things. Time passes and Emma deals with lack of confidence and low motivation to work towards what she really wants. She struggles. She's not perfect. She complains - it's not attractive but it's real. She loves someone who takes her for granted, etc. Dexter is a partier, cocky, ridiculous, insufferable sometimes - all the things that if we met someone in real life - we'd completely judge him the way that Dex is judged. But here we are also able to see his sensitive side - the side that is hard for him to tap in to and that he struggles to keep in touch with as his life spirals out of control and I couldn't help but feel bad for him.

The characters can be frustrating, or maybe the writing style might not appeal to you - but if you read it, I encourage you to think about the overall themes. I like that it made me think about my life and what I'm doing with it. About things I'm leaving unsaid and why? Or people I'm taking for granted. And how it reminded me that my life is huge but at the same time it's finite - and to make the most of it.

I love and couldn't agree more with what Molly said in her review, "Nicholls provides beauty and hope mixed in with his character's sorrow." Isn't that what life is made of?

Have you read it?

January Greys

Saturday, January 22, 2011

Ok, Happy Saturday! We have something to discuss. A state of the union if you will.  It's lengthy but I never make you read lengthy things so indulge me. Here goes:

I think it's the general consensus around these parts (the blog parts) that January sucks, we're longing for a vacation, we've all lost our mojo, we're unmotivated, we're not taking pictures, we're not creating anything, we're not doing our to-do lists...how many of you have stuck to your new years resolutions? (Remember those? my pearly whites have been un-flossed for a week). So here's the deal, it's Saturday, it's a new day, you had your fun last night so let's get to work. Here's some easy steps to accomplish something this weekend - do it in one day or two.

(...for this weekend at least)*
*I say this weekend because we all know it's ludicrous to set goals for a whole year. For me...let alone 1 month. I need victories - small ones that build up over time to a place where I can look back and check that I'm actually not worthless...because remember that one weekend? I can do that again!

1.Make a List.
First, Sit down with a cup of coffee, close your computer and write out your rough draft "To-Do" List.  Organize your actions in to categories like "Computer Tasks", "Errands in Town" and "Household Chores". This will make it easier to conceptualize what you have to do where so that you can move through the list swiftly - cutting out extra trips. Then, make a master list...decorate it or something, so that it's pleasant to look at, make sure the writing is nice. Put "Listen to Bootstraps by the Dandies" at the very top. Trust me.

2.Listen to Bootstraps by the Dandies.
They only give a sample - it's exactly 1 minute. That's all you need, you have a to-do list to do!!! Turn it up and rock out. It will motivate you. (thanks @swissminx) They are this chipper group of Swiss guys now living in London - I don't care if you don't like them, that's not the point, listen to their words! Now cross it off and move on.

3.Do something for your body.
Exercise. It's all about balance and it will clear your head and give you a fresher perspective. Go for a jog, take your dogs for a walk, yoga, do that workout dvd that you got for Christmas but you haven't opened yet. Shovel the driveaway...I don't really care, but get your blood moving and some fresh air.

4.Get Ready.
You were supposed to have just exercised, now shower and make yourself pretty. I mean, wear a cute outfit, put on makeup and paint your nails- do what you need to do, you will feel nicer.

5.Start your List!
And finish things on it. Cross those mothers off. Start with errands (you look nice) and finish them all. Then check your email (say hi to me), then do your housework. Save the computer related stuff for last for when you can sit down with a glass of wine feeling accomplished that you've crossed off the majority of your to do list.

6.Reward Yourself.
Seriously, If you crossed off a large chunk of or finished your list then you deserve something nice like that happy meal you've been craving (ok that's me) or that new Trente Starbucks drink or whatever - or schedule a pedicure. Sure you'll still have stuff left over but it won't be clouded with the overall buzz of pesky tasks. Maybe you realistically have 5 or less undone things on your list (I have no clue) but schedule one a day for the next week or something.

There you go! Happy weekend, see you Monday :)

well, hello amazing little necklace
via

and hi, Thursday! I woke up so excited today because tonight we are going to a friends house to eat knudeln! He is Austrian and whenever his parents visit, his mom spends about 3 days making this traditional Austrian food- they are similar to dumplings and stuffed with meats and spices. I can hardly wait, for real :)

P.S. Did you see this blogger portraits photography project?
P.S.S. Do you have cool blog cards like these? I have to admit, I've been asked for card before for this blog but I don't have any!

the triangle obsession continues.

     Happy New Year friends!
I'm back "home" in Switzerland after an incredible vacation in the US to visit friends and family for Christmas (it was my first time back to the US in over a year!) I've entered the new year a year older and feeling incredibly lucky that I have the friends and family that I have in my life - and it was so hard to say goodbye again.  I also entered the new year ready for new adventures with the amazing friends that I've been fortunate to meet here in Switzerland! I feel happy. It will be a good year.

I always get the questions about "what do you miss from the US"...and after being back briefly that's not hard to answer - Barnes & Nobles, Wendy's, choices (I was completely over stimulated when I first arrived...do you realize the cereal aisle is 10 times as long as what it is here in Switzerland??), the beautiful Midwest (you can see forever!)...Dunkin Donuts coffee, cheap prices and Chicago. (I'm not hard to keep happy).

What do I NOT miss from the US?
    -Walmart
-Bleach blonde girls in UGG boots, pajama pants and orange faces (clones?)
    -People wearing PJ's everywhere.
-The smell of fast food everywhere.
-How everything everywhere is trying to sell you something.
...and that's all I can think of now :)

I'm excited to be back - and excited to stay connected with you all again - I've been so lucky to meet you through blogging and >fill in a lot of sappy things< - seriously though...you've made this past year that much better!

And now...let the normal blogging commence ;)
