Under a New Light

Don't forget to "laugh a lot. Celebrate every gorgeous moment. Open up. Dive in. Be Free."
Those were the words that welcomed me to Guisela's profile page at her Etsy shop, Under a New Light.  I really couldn't imagine better words to describe the kind of person that she seems to be or the care-free playful jewelry in her shop! Her jewelry makes me daydream about pretty Bohemian dresses or white flowing shirts and jean shorts sitting around campfires and walking along beaches. Don't get me wrong, I would wear those amazing Turquoise Indian Arrow earrings any day of the week - and then every time I caught a glimpse of them I'd smile to myself about my little daydream =)

Flying Feather Earrings // Eclipse Upcycled Leather Zipper Pouch

Enjoy this feel-good interview with Guisela...
1.  Your shop, Under a New Light, has such a beautiful ambiance - where does your inspiration come from?
I really love photography. I'm not a photographer, but I get lots of inspiration from the color combination, the landscapes, the objects, the spaces. Sometimes, it's a photo with a Native American touch that helps me develop a new design.  Sometimes, it's geometry. I think that it's the influence of my science background :D

2. Is there a story behind the name of your store?
It's a bit of the story of my life. I'm always seeking new experiences and trying to constantly look at life from different perspectives.  And this is what I want to accomplish with my designs: Inspire people to see life under a new light.
3. What are 5 things that make you really happy?
-a great smile for my baby-girl
-a big hug
-a person who expresses his/her feelings
-a big bowl of ice cream
-a song that makes me dance

4.  Do you have a favorite item in your shop?
Currently I'm in love with my Flying Feathers Earrings (pictured above). (me too, lady, me too!)

Find and fall in love with Guisela/Under a New Light
Thank you for the interview, Guisela!

Friend Friday: On Feminism

friend friday!
book review
This weeks friend friday topic is on Feminism and fashion - here are my answers. Have a great weekend yo!

1. Do you think there is an incompatibility between feminism and a love for fashion?

While I'm sure there's a camp out there that would disagree, I definitely do not think so.

2. There is more to each of us than a love for fashion, how do you incorporate every aspect of yourself in to your blog?

I don't incorporate every aspect of myself here - it just started as a way to record things I like, like a scrapbook and is still that today - it's mostly a reflection of my sense of aesthetic and things I want to remember =)

3. With the fashion industry still being a male dominated profession, how do you think it would differ if women played a larger role?

I'm not in tune with the ins and outs of the fashion industry but my guess is that it wouldn't really change. When I think of notable people in the industry, a lot of women come to mind. If there are things that these women wanted to change (i.e. glorification of stick thin models, the problem of body image amongst women of every age, etc) then it should have been changed already - they are capable of doing it.

4. How is your self-image and the way your carry yourself informed by your beliefs?

Somehow I've grown to be a confident woman. I know I'm not perfect and if I fail - I failed and it's life - on to the next. I think this has come from having certain quality men and women in and around my life that have never treated me differently (specifically during my formative college years). And if someone has then they are probably not in my life today!

5. Do you think clothing/hair/makeup helps communicate the truth about yourself or are those things superfluous add-ons?

Everyone has to look like something, so I think it's impossible for your looks to not tell at least a portion of the truth of you.  Maybe how I dress says something about how I want to be seen...but it's not like I'm trying to be seen as something that I'm not. I just had to re-read that...haha. But anyway...I don't think it's superfluous at all. Plus, I might be just a little bit vain. I want to look good!

Say 'No' to typing extra words

I'm glad that so many of you are Team Anti-Word Verification with me! There was an overwhelming response to this post where I addressed it - so in case you want to be an anti-word verification ambassador, Diana (of Poppy Brew fame) created this prohibition-esque little button if you want it for your blog, isn't it a beauty?

So stand strong people! Think of what we can do with all that extra time, Right?! Give your readers back 15 seconds of their day! An accumulated 1 minute and 5 seconds per week and like...the total of an hour per blog in a year! Life is too short for Word Ver!

(This is all in good fun of course. Kind of. Obviously if google killed it I would be ecstatic)

What would you do with all those extra hours if everyone shut down word ver??

*We are still friends if you have it, I definitely understand if you've been spammed and are sick of it.

* Read Diana's post that highlights some specific things she could be doing. Word.

Dream flats

Why can't I find a flat like this?
Or this?!

The flat hunt is going ok - a little discouraging when we find the "perfect" one and they don't allow little Bama's.  On the other hand, I am savoring the time we have left in our little village by the lake (especially now that it's spring and summer) - so feeling peaceful about it all at the moment.

Switzerland Sunday - Lausanne

Last weekend my amiga and I hopped on a train and visited Lausanne, which is in the French part of Switzerland. It was beauuutiful and cultural and diverse and did I say beautiful? Here are some pictures and I posted more on my photography blog, sunday photo, if you are interested. I can't wait to go back!

And, if you haven't gotten enough of Lausanne, my friend Kristina has posted recently a few times about her trip there as well!

*Any image can be purchased at my efreeme shop, if it's not listed please email me which image you'd like and I would be happy to list it asap.

Cookies out of the blue

How awesome would it be if you were just walking down the street all hungry and wishing for a cookie (like I pretty much am all the time) and then one appeared in front of you on a string???? Yeah that could happen if you were in San Francisco and decided to walk by this cookie shops 2nd story window :)
See an article here :)

Update: Since I read the article, looks like Fat Cookies was shut down for not having permits :( (nice catch guys!) But you can follow @eatfatcookies on twitter to watch for where they appear next!

Silver Jewelry

Last week, Reni asked about options for silver jewelry.  Although I'm definitely a gold person lately (obviously, right?), silver jewelry is still just as classic and maybe easier to wear especially against some skin tones. Here are some silver jewelry options that I would have no troubles owning =)

Fasnacht in Switzerland

Our costumes at a Saturday night party (I'm the black swan!)
Before I moved to Switzerland, I had never heard of "Fasnacht" and I didn't really pay attention to Carnival in Europe - but oh. my. goodness. Fasnacht in Luzern has to be one of Europe's best kept secrets - it is a RIOT. Quite literally, actually. For 1 week this normally sedate, courteous, rule following and clean country goes insane. All of that recklessness held in the rest of the year? Unleashed. While celebrations are held throughout Switzerland, Luzern is known for hosting one of the craziest weeks.

(The above pictures were taken during a day parade by my friend Audrey!)

While celebrations can start as early as the January/February, It all officially starts at 5 am (oopsy, edited from 5:30 - you know I wasn't up!) on the morning of Dirty Thursday where Schwanenplatz in Luzern is packed with people in costume, gluhwine and beer is flowing, band music is playing...and it basically doesn't stop until Fat Tuesday. People call off of work for this week solely to spend the time drinking in costume. It's bizarre. I didn't attend the early morning kick off but I did hear the marching band going down the street even in my little village! There's basically two ways to experience Fasnacht - you either leave on vacation to avoid marching band music for a week straight OR if you can't beat them, join them =)

Pictures from my villages celebration
Even the surrounding villages have celebrations, including mine =) I love my town's celebration because it's a little more low-key - you don't have to wait in line forever to get food and drinks and everyone seems to know everybody so there's a laidback coming together vibe.

Anyway, it is totally mental, but if you're up for it - it would be an amazing time to visit Luzern! Last year M and I casually observed the madness but this year we jumped in! Sink or swim! (or get confetti thrown on  you if you're not in costume) =)

photo via hearted girl
I've hesitated to write about it because, probably like you, it was just shocking - and there really are no words to convey the feelings. But, I know we are all feeling this together. Help now. Help in 6 months when the news has forgotten, and in a year when people aren't thinking of it anymore but the pain there is worse and life is still not normal. These things last.

Facebook and Your Blog

If I wasn't sold on having a Facebook page for your blog when I signed up for it a few months back, I am now. Facebook has rolled out some changes fairly recently that let you use Facebook as your page as opposed to as yourself or...your personal account.  For example, when I am using FB as Village and I like a new page or comment on a status update - it tells them that "Village" liked them or that "Village" left them a comment on their status.  For me, it's a great way to keep my blog happenings separate from my regular FB page, which appeals to me.  I also like it because I know when I am interacting with a blog friend - they know who more clearly than if a random girl named Krystal said something to them :)

How to use Facebook as your blog page:
1. Click "Account" in upper right hand corner
2. Select "Use Facebook as Page"
3. On the box that pops up, click "Switch"
4. Voila, you are now using FB as your blog page.
Happy interacting!

Do you have a Facebook page for your blog? Let me know so I can connect with you. Here's mine!

(P.S. You can switch back at any time :))

Little Notebooks & Stationary (Ciaffi)

Say hellooo to the new sponsors on the block. Well, kind of! The seriously talented sisters, Mariana and Paula (of Branda fame) are back as a sponsor with another one of their successful Etsy stores, Ciaffi.
In this store they sell the CUTEST notebooks (and I don't use cute often, but these are!) and options for stationary to choose from.

Awhile back I bought these from Ciaffi and am still using them and loving them. (List makers unite!). With prices anywhere from $5-$25 - most anything you get is a steal, imo.

Maybe you want tiny envelopes and paper? I'd never send them because I'd just want to keep them and look at them :)

There is seriously the widest variety of options to choose from at Ciaffi. I am already planning out my next purchase...if you are addicted to notebooks like me, this is your goldmine, I promise :)

P.S. They are PERFECTION for carrying around in your purses. Perfection.

P.S.S. Mariana and Paula also have a blog, The4inOne, where they bring you Etsy delights every day :)

Friend Friday ~ Balance & Blogging

From a snowshoeing trip in the mountains
*Winner of Brideblu giveaway = Ashley from Smile Steady!

This weeks Friend Friday topic is one that I've seen being discussed in the blog world lately (can someone please come up with another name for a blog besides "blog"??).  Blogging is easy to love, it feels good to get feedback, validation and encouragement. It's good to exercise our voices. And the best part is - we make good friends.  But, what happens when we feel frustration that we can't balance it all? There are comments to respond to, post ideas to come up with, layout issues, blogs to visit, tweets to tweet, a FB page to update, followers to follow, networking to do, guest posts to write, pictures to take and the "next best thing" to think up! Did that not just make your head spin? And it never ends. There seems to always be something that you could be doing. Oh yes, and then our real lives to live. NBD!

When I started this blog a little over a year ago (i've been blogging for awhile), I never thought that I'd gain so much satisfaction from it. When one moves to a new country and is not working it makes for a great filler and a great way to stay sane - and a taste of what its like to run your own little business.  But things can easily start to feel off balance when it starts taking up more time than you are comfortable with. I know that a lot of us can relate to this topic which is why I thought I'd share my two cents in this weeks Friend Friday.

1. When it comes to prioritizing your life, in what place does blogging fall?
Blogging is probably up there in my top 5 as it has quickly become one of my favorite hobbies. Instead of relaxing with magazines, it's easy to relax while reading your blogs and learning different design programs so I can change my header ever. day. (jk).  But - it doesn't prevail over spontaneous day trips with friends, nights out, watching Scrubs with Mark, and most importantly...exercise.

2. We all wish we had more free time to dedicate to blogging and all it entails. What are your tricks for taking advantage of the time you do have to be as productive as possible?
Ok, so I don't always follow this, but in an ideal world my idea of productive is not checking my FB or Twitter a million times per day. I try to keep my excitement about those platforms down because I think they can be a huge time waster - so I tend to pop in only when I have something to say or tweet a post I think people might like. (And do NOT want to hear every thought that runs through my head) Also, I have certain steps that I complete each day that ensures that I stay on top of things like for example - check out new followers, respond to emails, etc.

3. Have you discovered any short-cuts that makes blogging easier or more time efficient?
Yes! Google Reader folders are my best friends forever, I want to marry them.  I have all kinds of folders that ensure I'm not wasting time. For example, loyal readers and friends are in a folder and I'm sure to visit their blogs first and I know that I will be commenting/supporting them whereas those bloggers that don't return comments or care about connecting...get scanned in reader and I don't have to worry about visiting them =) And there's more to ensure that the blogs I spend my time on are worth it.
OH...and it's my personal mission to abolish word verification, thus making blogging easier and more time efficient for everyone. I don't even want to think about how much time you or I have spent entering letters in to word verifications, getting them wrong..repeating. It's the bane of my existence and mostly unnecessary. FACT: I find blogs I like and want to visit again, however, if they have word ver - I'm like...50% likely to not return - depends on my mood! (I do keep it on for posts over 4 days old as those are the ones that get spam comments)

4. Do you have an editorial calendar or something similar that helps you plan ahead?
I kind of informally write down in my calendar posts I definitely want to get to in a month- mostly regarding sponsors.  Other than that I'm super spontaneous because it's hard for me to plan even 2 days ahead - I might not be feeling the item/art, etc then so it wouldn't feel right posting it! So no, I don't really plan ahead.
5. If time wasn’t an issue what you would be doing on your blog/for your blog that you aren’t doing now?
If time weren't an issue I would personally email my loyal "readers"/blog friends to thank them more often. I know who they are! I think that's why sending a newsletter appeals to me - I can write more candidly than I usually do on the blog and maybe start new conversations that way with people who want to be connected in that way. (Sign up to the left!) I think I'd also be more active in networking sites like IFB, 20sb, BlogHer...but, dude, I couldn't begin to fit anymore user names in my brain.
I think that the one most important thing, though, that I use to maintain balance - is time away from the blog and blog world. I think I learned this when I was in the US for Christmas and was unable to read blogs and respond to comments - I put up a few posts but ultimately, it was a 3 week break. And guess what, the blog didn't crumble, I didn't lose readers and the time away put blogging and it's importance in a new perspective.  Each week I'm sure to take days away from the self-imposed pressure to respond to every single comment and visit every single blog that I follow.  I hope you do too!

sunday funday

Orange gauzy sunlight in the apartment - one of my favorite things. The other? That little brown dog (I swear he's happy but this picture makes me laugh).

Hope you guys had great weekends! Our happenings included a chili cook-off (very random) and a Fasnacht (carnival) party. Jen and I managed to throw a costume together in under 24 hours...which is impressive (for me) so stay tuned for pics ;)

+A pretty incredible Chianti Beef Stew that we've made twice in the past two weeks
+Howdy Heidi on Dirty Thursday in luzern
+Remember this sweater? It has been acquired and it turns out...I really don't have a problem with wearing it everyday.
+Remember this coat? I ran in to it the other day and it was very serendipity, so I bought it. And I want to write it more poetry every time I wear it. It's that good.
+Pretty sure these crystal stud earrings are magical.

P.S. I'm going to do a weekly newsletter...if you want to sign up! I think it will be a fun way to keep in touch on a different level. So far my plans for it are for it to be informative and fun, as opposed to a total waste of your email inbox space.
